The cities slogan, “We don’t coast”, describes the forward thinking and growth focused attitude of the city residents and businesses. Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska making it the anchor of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area, with around 445,000 residents. It is the county seat of Douglas County, and nestled along the banks of the Missouri River. It’s riverside location makes it a prime location for insects like spiders, mosquitoes, and ants. But it’s easy to see why the area continues to be such an area of growth – it was voted #1 for Forbes’, “Best Bang-for-the-Buck City”, as well as “America’s Fastest Recovering Cities lists”. Tourism is growing and boosting the economy greatly. It’s history is rich with growth and perseverance.
The city became officially incorporated in 1857, when the first residents arrived from the neighboring city of Council Bluffs, Iowa, by crossing the Missouri River. The city’s nickname, “Gateway to the West,” comes from an easily accessible crossing, now called Lone Tree Ferry. Omaha was introduced to the world, when it played host the World’s Fair, named the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in 1898. The city quickly became a major transportation hub in the United States, and remained that through the 19th century.
The community has experienced devastation. In 1913, a tornado ripped through Omaha, becoming known as the Easter Sunday tornado. There were 100 people lost, and hundreds of homes destroyed. Despite the devastation, the city continued to thrive into the 20th century, and the primary industries in the area changed to meatpacking plants and the Omaha Stockyards.
Today, in the 21st century, the Omaha metro is the home to four Fortune 500 companies, including: Berkshire Hathaway, Kiewilt Corporation, Mutual of Omaha, and Pacific Corporation. It’s also home to other major industries such as banking and architecture/engineering. A thriving economy brings new construction for homes, schools, and businesses, as well as the protection of natural areas.
In 1913 a devastating tornado ripped through Omaha, becoming known as the Easter Sunday tornado. It killed more than 100 people, destroyed hundreds of homes, and cut a long swathe through the city, including the heart of North Omaha’s Jewish and African-American commercial district, which suffered the most damage.
Omaha is divided into six geographic areas, which are: Downtown, Midtown, North Omaha, South Omaha, West Omaha and East Omaha. Miracle Hills, Boys Town, Regency, and Gateway are part of West Omaha. The city is rich with historic neighborhoods, which take you back to a part of Omaha’s persevering past. With a thriving economy, residents of Omaha find themselves surrounded by a plethora of choices for activities, events, dining, and entertainment. There is no shortage of fun in this city; whether you’re looking to catch a concert on a Friday night or heading to the Missouri River to cast a line – there’s adventure around every corner. There is something to do for people of every age. It’s a great city to both raise a family, and/or live the bachelor(ette) life.
If you’re looking to explore some of Omaha’s top sights – first check out the Henry Doorly Zoo, which remains Nebraska’s top attraction. The zoo was named the best zoo in the world by Tripadvisor in 2014. When looking to explore the city’s rich history, head to the Durham Museum, located inside an art deco train station, built in 1931. The museum offers a peek into the fascinating history, which features traveling exhibits which highlight culture, science, history, industry and more.
Also built the same year, the Joslyn Art Museum features works of art, and the same art deco decorating known for that era. It’s important for children to know their homes history; and the Omaha Children’s Museum is a great space for them to learn about it.
Whether you reside downtown, in the outskirts of the city, or in the suburbs of Omaha, there is outdoor adventure around every corner, just waiting for you to explore! The Lauritzen Gardens features four seasons of quality maintained plant displays, providing education and aesthetic pleasure for the community. Nested in the heart of downtown, the Heartland of America park features 31 acres to explore. Lewis and Clark first discovered the location in 1804, due to mounds that were present, which later became known to be the remains of the Otoe village.
Don’t forget that the Missouri River runs through the city, providing non stop activity to fish, swim, and boat all summer long. Both growth and environmental protection are amazing parts of Omaha, but with that comes pest issues in and around households, neighborhoods, and businesses. We understand what types of problems Omaha residents face, and our custom-designed solutions overcome the issues pertinent to Midwestern living.
